At the eastern end of the village a large number of properties & businesses were demolished. The "slum clearance" as it became known, left the spaces we now call the village green. Back Lane no longer exits onto Main Street. East Terrace was completely removed. Many local people knew that the properties weren't "slums" & were swept away for an unknown reason.
The long terrace of houses on Main Street on the aerial photo above was called East Terrace. |
On the image above St Mary's Church is top right & Burley House at the bottom. The areas that are now green, to the west of Main Street, show where the houses & shops used to be.
Below is a photograph, looking south with the wall that surrounded Burley House in the background. To the left hand side of the car was Mabel Sutcliffe's little green hut shop that sold groceries & confectionery. The car is coming out of Back Lane. Behind the car is Horsfall Terrace (its house numbering went from 7 to 17).
The black and white poles on the left of the image & another in front of the side of the car were for belisha beacons for an old pedestrian crossing. The crossing would have been marked with studs in the road.

In the 1970s & 1980s one of the best pubs around with an upstairs function room, where live bands of all genres played, to the present now just houses.
The great sadness was that many of the recent owners of The Malt Shovel Hotel changed it from a very popular pub with a dining room, to a restaurant with a bar attached. The sequence of business failures that resulted was all too predictable. The Malt Shovel Hotel is now x4 town houses plus there's a row of terraces in the car park. |
The c1966 aerial image below is of the east end of Main Street, Burley in Wharfedale, at the Malt Shovel corner. The image is from the John Horton Collection in the Burley Archive.
On the corner opposite the Malt Shovel was Rayner's Forge or Old Smithy. It then moved to the low rise building, directly opposite the entrance to the Malt Shovel.
We believe this building was occupied in the 1960s by Wright's Engineering. They manufactured pressed wire products & it was run by Charlie Ridley. One of their employees was called Mrs Oddy. |

Warburton Brothers Garage
Image below dates between 1919 & 1922.
1919 - William Ingham Warburton (conductor of Burley Brass Band) & his brother Robert Warburton borrowed £500 from William's employer, Mary Chorley to buy the site & establish the business. The brothers converted two cottages into a workshop.
In October 1922 at Warburton Brothers Garage - the cottages on the right, were burnt to the ground with the loss of 3 motor lorries & a motorcycle. The house remained intact.

The two cottages that were burnt down in 1922, were replaced with a much bigger & longer structure or shed, as seen on the 1937 aerial image. The shed was leased to Samuel Ledgard's Cream Bus Service as a bus depot from c1929 to 1931.
This shed is now occupied by MCC Auto Centre (2019) |
The shed that is now occupied by the Co-Op store & previously by the Burley Motor Company & Otley Carpets is believed to have been erected in the late 1940s by Warburton's Garage as a car showroom.

Its a puzzle as to when & why the house that stood on the corner of Main Street & York Road was demolished. It had remained a part of the Warburton Brothers Garage site until at least the 1970s. It wasn't demolished as part of the "slum clearance" by Ilkley Urban District Council. Anyone know the reason why & when it was cleared? Contact us if you know.

Late 60s to late 1970s - Hellas Laundrette run by Jean & Geoff Hellas.
"In 1976 numbers 78 and 80 Main Street, were still two separate buildings which formed the laundrette. The washing and drying was done in No. 80 and drycleaning was taken in at No.78. There were lots of regular customers who would complain bitterly if someone came in to dry washing done at home and used a dryer. The regulars would demand that this load of drying was taken out so that they could use it when their washing was done. Happy days!"
