Jane Forster nee Arnold was the daughter of Dr Thomas Arnold (1795-1842) who built Fox How in 1833. Her brother Matthew Arnold (1822-1888) inherited the house on their father's death.

Limerick Lace
Florence was a talented artist. In the 1880s she used her skills to create lace designs that helped revive the Irish "Limerick Lace" industry after it had been badly affected by imports of machine made lace from Nottingham, England. In 1893 she set up the Limerick Lace School, which trained women in the skills required & provided an outlet for their work.
Limerick Lace comes in two forms
- Tambour Lace, made by stretching a net over a circular frame & drawing threads through it with a hook.
- Needlerun, made by using a needle to embroider on a net background.
Limerick Lace is a mixture of hand-made & machine made, it is embroidered by hand on a machine made net.
