Greenholme Mills Industrial Estate (1968-2018)
In 1966 the southern range of buildings of Greenholme Mills had been gutted by an arson attack.
In 1967 the Wm Fison & Co Limited board of directors called an EGM & the textile business was liquidated. In 1968 an auction took place that sold off & divided up the Greenholme estate, the land & all the various properties were sold to different buyers. At the auction in 1968 - Jack West & George Reed bought the mill site & the buildings that remained after the fire. They then let them out to a variety of tenants.
Jack West bought out George Reed in the 1980s & created a trust to take on ownership. The "Trustees of Greenholme Mills" sold to Andrew Hillas in 2012, who in turn sold to housing developers in 2018. 2020 The building that was believed to be the former canteen of the mills was demolished.
All the businesses that remained were evicted as the entire site will now be housing. Apartments in the mill buildings & new build property on the remaining land. |

Greenholme Mills had the potential to be a smaller version of Salts Mill, Saltaire or Dean Clough in Halifax. But sadly that isn't going to happen as planning permission has been given & construction started (2020) to convert the main building into apartments & for new build properties to be constructed on the remaining land (2021).
There appear to be no plans to use the existing goits & turbines to generate electricity to power the properties. A sad end for what was once the largest water-powered mill in England.
Those businesses that remained (Oct 2020) were forced to find somewhere else outside of Burley to trade from. Burley in Wharfedale has now lost its last remaining employment land. Any new employment land will need to be sited in the green belt.
